Dr. Wahbah al-Zuhaili: A Brief Biography
Dr. Wahbah al-Zuhaili was born in 1932 in Damascus, Syria. He memorized the Quran at a young age and studied Islamic sciences under various scholars in Syria and Egypt. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Shariah from Damascus University in 1956, his master's degree in comparative jurisprudence from Cairo University in 1960, and his doctorate in Islamic law from Al-Azhar University in 1966.
He taught at Damascus University for more than four decades, where he was the dean of the Faculty of Shariah and Law from 1977 to 1982. He also taught at various other universities and institutions around the world, such as King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, Qatar University, Kuwait University, International Islamic University Malaysia, and Islamic University Rotterdam. He was a member of several academic and scholarly associations, such as the International Union of Muslim Scholars, the European Council for Fatwa and Research, and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy.
He authored more than 50 books and hundreds of articles on various topics related to Islamic law, such as fiqh, ushul fiqh, maqasid al-shariah, qawa'id al-fiqhiyyah, tafsir, hadith, kalam, tasawwuf, history, politics, economics, ethics, human rights, interfaith dialogue, and contemporary issues. Some of his most famous works include Al-Fiqh al-Islami wa Adillatuhu (Islamic Jurisprudence and Its Proofs), Tafsir al-Munir (The Enlightening Exegesis), Al-Tariq ila al-Turath al-Islami (The Path to the Islamic Heritage), Al-Wajiz fi Ushul al-Fiqh (The Concise on the Principles of Jurisprudence), and Fiqh al-Islam wa Adillatuhu fi Daw' al-Maqasid wa al-Qawa'id (The Jurisprudence of Islam and Its Proofs in Light of the Objectives and Principles).
He was known for his moderate and balanced approach to Islamic law, which combined respect for the classical tradition with openness to contemporary realities and challenges. He advocated for ijtihad (independent reasoning) based on maqasid al-shariah (the higher objectives of Islamic law) and qawa'id al-fiqhiyyah (the legal maxims) to address new issues and situations.
